Definitions and data sources

The graph shows how the average number of missing, decayed or filled teeth for 5-year-olds varies by NHS Board (data by local authority not being available).  Research by the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry suggests that this measure is strongly correlated with other aspects of disadvantage.  For comparison purposes, the equivalent data for England and Wales is also shown.

The data source is a 2005/06 survey conducted by the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry.

Overall adequacy of the indicator: high.  The data is based on a very large survey.
